Effect of Elastic Anisotropy on Surface Pattern Evolution of Epitaxial Thin Films

چکیده
Stress-induced surface instability and evolution of epitaxial thin films leads to formation of a variety of self-assembled surface patterns with feature sizes at microand nanoscales. The anisotropy in both the surface and bulk properties of the film and substrate has profound effects on the nonlinear dynamics of surface evolution and pattern formation. Experimentally it has been demonstrated that the effect of anisotropy strongly depends on the crystal orientation of the substrate surface on which the film grows epitaxially. In this paper we develop a nonlinear model for surface evolution of epitaxial thin films on generally anisotropic crystal substrates. Specifically, the effect of bulk elastic anisotropy of the substrate on epitaxial surface pattern evolution is investigated for cubic germanium (Ge) and SiGe films on silicon (Si) substrates with four different surface orientations: Si(001), Si(111), Si(110), and Si(113). Both linear analysis and nonlinear numerical simulations suggest that, with surface anisotropy neglected, ordered surface patterns form under the influence of the elastic anisotropy, and these surface patterns clearly reflect the symmetry of the underlying crystal structures of the substrate. It is concluded that consideration of anisotropic elasticity reveals a much richer dynamics of surface pattern evolution as compared to isotropic models.

متن کاملInterface evolution in three-dimensions with curvature-dependent energy and surface diffusion: interface-controlled evolution, phase transitions, epitaxial growth of elastic films
When the interfacial energy is a nonconvex function of orientation, the anisotropic curvature flow equation becomes backward parabolic. To overcome the instability thus generated, a regularization of the equation that governs the evolution of the interface is needed. In this paper we develop a regularized theory of curvature flow in threedimensions that incorporates surface diffusion and bulk-s...

The morphological evolution during spinodal decomposition of a binary alloy thin film elastically constrained by a substrate is studied. Elastic solutions, derived for elastically anisotropic thin films subject to the mixed stress-free and constraint boundary conditions, are employed in a three-dimensional phase-field model. The Cahn–Hilliard diffusion equation for a thin film boundary conditio...

We show a detailed magneto-optical Kerr study at room temperature of well characterized epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films grown onto (110) and (11̄8) SrTiO3 substrates. The films present a well-defined uniaxial (two-fold) magnetic anisotropy ascribed to substrate-induced anisotropy. In particular, the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy in the(110)-oriented LSMO films originates from the exist...
